SNAKEATSNAKE is a one-man EBM and industrial project from Bulgaria, known for its unique blend of electronic subgenres. Originally founded in 2013 under the name Gefährlicher Reiz, the project was later rebranded and relaunched as SNAKEATSNAKE in 2020. The music is characterized by rapid, pumping beats and minimal yet aggressive vocals, creating a raw, back-to-the-roots sound. Its lyrics explore a fascinating fusion of the occult and technology, delving into themes of singularity, mysticism, and secret military underground sites.
The project is based in Sofia, Bulgaria, where it was conceived and continues to evolve. SNAKEATSNAKE is driven by the creative vision of its sole member, who crafts each track with a distinctive, hands-on approach. The use of basic synths and DIY scrap percussions adds an authentic, gritty texture to the music. Despite its underground origins, SNAKEATSNAKE has steadily gained recognition for its intense and uncompromising style. The project embodies a raw, unfiltered energy that speaks to the dark, pulsating heart of EBM and industrial music.
SNAKEATSNAKE draws its inspiration from some of the most haunting and forgotten places beneath the earth’s surface, such as labyrinth underground sewers and the cold, desolate corridors of nuclear shelters. These environments, filled with the echoes of history, provide a fitting backdrop for the project's dark and gritty sound. The atmosphere of asbestos dust clinging to every surface, and hardened grease oil seeping into the cracks, infuses the music with a tangible sense of decay and danger. Exposed cables hang like forgotten veins, pulsing with latent energy, while the faint, ghostly footsteps left behind in time reverberate through the tunnels, creating a sense of endless pursuit. These tunnels, stretching for hundreds of meters with no clear exit, mirror the relentless and unyielding nature of SNAKEATSNAKE's sound—an immersive, inescapable experience that captivates and disturbs in equal measure.
This inspiration translates into a visceral live performance that has taken SNAKEATSNAKE across Europe in recent years. The project has played over several dozen shows, leaving its mark on stages in Bulgaria, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Spain, France, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Republic of Serbia, and Greece. Each performance is a journey into the subterranean world that birthed its music, with audiences drawn into the suffocating, industrial atmosphere that SNAKEATSNAKE so meticulously crafts. The project’s live shows are not just concerts but immersive experiences, where the eerie essence of underground sewers and nuclear shelters comes to life, transporting listeners into a world of sonic and sensory overload.
The debut album, titled SNAKE EATS SNAKE, was released on December 16, 2021, through the underground label AEON Tapes. The album contains 14 tracks, recorded and produced in 2020, with most of the material originally written back in 2013. The limited cassette edition was hand-dubbed in the town of Lom and came in an eco-friendly "Maltese cross" style package, limited to just 50 copies.
In 2023, the album was reissued in an expanded CD-R edition featuring 22 tracks, including remixes and demo versions of songs like “All Is Lost,” “Bite,” and “Bloodthirst.” It was also released in a new run of 50 black audio cassettes under the name Copper Edition, containing additional remixes, and finally on red vinyl in a self-released edition limited to 200 copies.
